Faith Corner There is a popular saying, probably more philosophical than scientific, that when a butterfly moves its wings, the breeze it starts can create a hurricane on the far side of the world. At St. Benedict School we believe that it is acts of kindness that start greater and greater movements. Every kind word, every helping hand, every choice to support and assist and nurture, leads to profound and far-reaching effects. The students are asked to notice such acts of kindness and to jot them down on slips of paper. At the end of the month there is a drawing and some students are recognized. But whether or not someone’s name is pulled, those acts of kindness make the world a better place. And all of this reflects in a very real way the love God has for us, day after day. Let’s join our children in showing the love of the Lord!
Music “Ah, music… a magic beyond all we do here!” (Albus Dumbledore, in Harry Potter)
Our SBCS music classes are indeed off to a magical start.
Kindergarten students are able to describe and play instruments, starting with maracas and cowbells. They also are discovering their singing voices!
First and second graders are firming up their knowledge of steady beat, and are learning how that is different from rhythm. Ask these little ones to sing “We’re Nuts!” for you!
Third, fourth, and fifth grades are hard at work preparing songs for the Veterans Day Concert. Save November 4
th as the concert date, and please do invite veterans and active service personnel from your families.
Grades six and seven are all playing ukuleles! Thanks to a donation of instruments from the Kala Company, these students are deep in the mysteries of frets and chord charts and strumming. Our favorite song so far is “Lime in the Coconut.”
Eighth grade is beginning a study of West African instruments and will soon form their own drum circle, learning not only music but also teamwork and team spirit.
May music be a blessing in your life, too!
